Item Description... Overview Richard Ireton, a Hong Kong-based correspondent for America?s top news magazine, is about to discover dangerous new political currents flowing through South China. Assigned to investigate the disappearance of an American businessman, he uncovers the growing influence of Qigong, a Taoist meditation and martial arts movement, among Chinese organized crime gangs and plotting army troops.
This subversively spiritual, anti-foreigner cult rallies around an enigmatic leader, Great Master Wu, posing an imminent threat to peace in Asia and the continent?s relations with the United States. As Ireton?s reporting takes him closer into the story, he stumbles across both a political conspiracy complete with strange spiritual dimensions and secret hideouts of China?s underground Christian church.
Publishers Description
Richard Ireton is a Hong Kong-based foreign correspondent for an American weekly news magazine. When he is sent to Guangdong, the Chinese province adjacent to Hong Kong, to investigate the disappearance of Chuck McHale, a missing American, he discovers there are dangerous new political currents flowing through South China. In the middle of these developments are practitioners of Qigong, a Taoist meditation and martial arts movement, who are rallying around their Great Master Wu. These fiercely anti-foreign Qigong adherents have allied with renegade forces of the Chinese army, and Ireton learns that together they pose a dangerous new threat to peace in Asia and relations with the United States. Ireton's hunt for McHale, who has run afoul of these Qigong army elements, brings him into the heart of China's underground "house church" movement, where McHale has sought refuge. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | gripping! May 27, 2008 |
| This was an impulse buy at a bookstore - the cover grabbed me, and the book did the rest of the work. I couldn't put it down. Not knowing much about Chinese culture, I was completely absorbed in Aikman's obvious grasp of the atmosphere and details of China, reflected through the eyes of his protagonist, Richard Ireton. After reading hundreds of mysteries and thrillers, I've figured out it isn't really that tough to tell a decent story: I've flipped through enough books to see the same plot come back over and over, but this one had both a really interesting story, and the research and details to set it apart. I also just read Adam Gittlin's The Deal, which had the same level of attention to the small stuff, combined with relentless forward momentum. Gittlin's book is brand-new, but it's available - check them both out! | | | Write your own review about Awaken The Dragon
