Item Description...
Product Description "Grandmaster Repertoire" is a new series of high quality chess books based on the main lines, written by strong grandmasters. The aim is to provide the reader with a complete repertoire at a level good enough for elite tournaments, and certainly also for the club championship. "Grandmaster Repertoire" provides a repertoire to last a lifetime. Top GM Boris Avrukh charts a course towards an advantage with 1.d4. Avrukh is used to facing the best players in the world. In this book he presents an improved version of the repertoire that elevated him to the top 50, focusing on main lines with a king side fianchetto. "1.d4 Volume One" covers the openings after 1.d4 d4 2.c4, particularly the Catalan, Queen's Gambit Accepted, Semi-Slav, Slav, and other Queen's Gambit lines.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Short-changed Nov 28, 2009 |
| I ordered Grandmaster Repertoire 1 and Grandmaster Repertoire 2. The first volume was delivered, but the order for the second was canceled, following delays of several months. So, evidently, I should not have taken the first volume. By the way, it turns out that Grandmaster Repertoire 3 is not consequent to the first volume. Be advised. | | | | Simply outstanding! Nov 21, 2009 |
First of all, let me say that in the last two months I have won two tournaments, achieved a FIDE Master title and din't lose a single game, out of 16 played. And, most of that success I can contribute to the lessons I learned from this book. The most interesting thing is that I didn't reach any of the openings described in this book! My opponents usually opted for 1...Nf6, and on the rare occasions the played 1...d5, the game reached standard Slav or semi-Slav defence. I mostly worked on the Catalan sections, and didn't feel ready to play 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3, the system recommended in this book.
But, by simply studying excellent analysis and explanations from Avrukh, I was able to bring my understanding of the game on the higher level! On many occasions, I was suprised to find that you can successfully play on win in the positions I would previously dismiss as completely level or boring. Therefeore, this is opening book, but by studying what is written here one will not only improve his opening play or learn new variations, but will also improve his chess understanding in general.
But, one caveat: I really think you need to be above 2000-2100 level to benefit from this book. If the reader is below 2000, I think he will find it a little bit too difficult. | | | | Avrukh upped the standard for chess book writing Sep 1, 2009 |
I love this book and surely the price I paid for it was all worth it because I learned a lot. Some reviewers said that this book should be read by stronger players (2000 and up?) but I think all it takes to benefit from it is the love for chess and the learning that comes with being passionate about something. I am still unrated because I seldom have time to compete here in my country but I have wins against masters (NM, FM) and a draw against a GM so far. With the help of this book, I hope to compete and play well in a relatively strong tourney this September.
Boris Avrukh has elevated the standard for other chess authors through this book with his excellent research, analysis, and explanation. | | | | Great Opening Repertoire book, with caveats Aug 13, 2009 |
Avrukh's book is indeed one of the best repertoire books I've ever seen. It is certainly far more detailed than Schandorff's book which came out after this. It also has in mind a more advanced audience than Schandorff, which is also a good buy. Having said that, and having read other comments, I will focus on some areas that could have been improved.
The Grandmaster Repertoire series advertises itself by saying, "tired of bad positions, try the main lines". Avrukh has decided to focus on the Catalan, and this has immediately become a must-read for anyone playing or facing the Catalan. But his choice for the Semi-Slav, 5.b3, is hardly a main line, and he does not address how White should face an early c6-c5, which is a major hole in his repertoire.
The great majority of players will never notice the holes because Avrukh's analysis is fantastic. John Watson has hinted that there's a problem with Avrukh's treatment of the Chigorin, but as of now, his line has been tested successfully in tournaments.
I strongly recommend this book, and eagerly await volume 2 (which will deal with responses other than 1...d5). I also really want to see the second edition, in which Avrukh hopefully will address the problems readers have found in the current repertoire.
Please remember that this is a repertoire book and not an encyclopedia. Avrukh does not analyse any of the main lines that fall outside his repertoire, so it would be unfair to criticise him for not covering those variations. Enjoy it for what it is. It is the single best volume on 1.d4 that has been published in the last few years and includes masterful analysis of recent trends in the Catalan. | | | | GM Repertoire 1: 1.d4 Jul 10, 2009 |
| The first series of Avrukh's GM Rep. series was excellent. I am very eager to read the second volume, Grandmaster Repertoire 2: 1. d4. Has anyone who ordered the second value received it yet? | | | Write your own review about 1.d4 (Grandmaster Repertoire) (v. 1)
