NOW the end and object of a game is to checkmate your opponent's King; and as a means to that end to take as many pieces of his as you can without losing your own. But first you must learn to make the ordinary moves with readiness and certainty. Therefore to your board again. Arrange the pieces---if with somebody opposite to you so much the better---it is of no consequence who has first move.1 1 Between skilled players the one who moves first has a little advantage. The analysis, however, may have advanced since then. 16 VALUE OF PIECES. Disregard at first the consequences of the moves, so they be only rightly made. Advance the Pawns. Take pieces and be re-taken. Endeavour to bring men to support each other, and especially Pawns to support pieces. In exchanging, if you can manage to take a piece for a Pawn, or a piece of higher value for one of a lower, you have an advantage --- have gained the exchange, as the term is. Recollect that the Queen is much the most valuable piece on the board. The Castle comes next; while Bishops and Knights are about equal--- each being estimated at three times the value of a Pawn.1 This is their intrinsic value. In a game it will depend very much upon position at the time. After moving the pieces about at one or two sittings, playing a game of takings and re-takings, or having a sham-fight, you may try to begin to give Check and Checkmate.
